Letitia James Ran on One Clear Mission: Hold Trump Accountable
When Letitia James launched her 2018 campaign for New York attorney general, she didn’t mince words. “My decision to seek the office was about that man in the White House,” she said bluntly—referring to then-President Donald Trump. At a time when many politicians avoided naming Trump directly, James made him the centerpiece of her platform.
“Nobody is above the law,” she declared on social media, vowing to “shine a bright light into every dark corner of his real estate dealings.” That promise wasn’t just campaign rhetoric—it became the driving force of her tenure.
From Rhetoric to Real Legal Action
James didn’t wait long to act. Within months of taking office in 2019, her office launched a sweeping civil investigation into the Trump Organization’s financial practices. Unlike criminal probes—which require proof “beyond a reasonable doubt”—civil cases allow attorneys general to pursue financial penalties and operational reforms based on a lower burden of proof.
Her team subpoenaed banks, insurers, and former Trump executives. They pored over decades of tax filings, property valuations, and internal emails. The goal? To determine whether Trump systematically inflated asset values to secure loans and insurance while deflating them to reduce tax liability.
The Landmark Civil Fraud Case
In 2022, James filed a bombshell civil lawsuit against Donald Trump, his three adult children, and the Trump Organization, accusing them of orchestrating a decade-long fraud scheme.
The court ultimately agreed. In a scathing 2024 ruling, a New York judge found Trump liable for fraud and ordered him to disgorge $454 million in ill-gotten gains (an earlier $500 million judgment was reduced on appeal).
“This wasn’t about politics,” James said after the verdict. “It was about truth, transparency, and the rule of law.”
Trump’s Fury and Political Fallout
Trump has repeatedly attacked James, calling her a “racist” and accusing her of running a “GET TRUMP” agenda. In 2018, he tweeted: “She does little else but rant, rave & politic against me.”
But James’s popularity in New York has only grown. As the first woman—and first African American woman—elected to statewide office in New York, she’s become a symbol of accountability in an era of political impunity.
Her legal victories have also inspired other state AGs to take on powerful figures once considered untouchable.
What’s Next for James?
Though speculation swirls about a potential run for governor or U.S. Senate, James insists her focus remains on her current role. “There’s still work to do,” she told reporters in September 2025.
Whether she seeks higher office or not, her legacy is already cemented: she proved that even the most powerful can be held to account—when someone has the courage to try.
