58 Million Pounds of Corn Dogs Are Recalled Because of Wood in the Batter

Wood in Your Corn Dog? Massive 58-Million-Pound Recall Shakes U.S. Freezers

Nationwide Corn Dog Recall After Consumers Find Wood in Batter

In one of the largest food safety recalls of 2025, Hillshire Brands has voluntarily pulled approximately 58 million pounds of corn dogs and sausage-on-a-stick products from shelves nationwide after at least five consumers reported injuries from pieces of wood embedded in the batter .

What Products Are Affected?

The recall impacts two popular frozen breakfast and snack lines manufactured by Hillshire Brands, a subsidiary of Tyson Foods:

  • State Fair Corn Dogs on a Stick
  • Jimmy Dean Pancakes & Sausage on a Stick

These items were produced between March 17 and September 26, 2025 at a facility in Haltom City, Texas, and distributed nationwide—including to school districts and U.S. Department of Defense facilities.

How to Identify Recalled Items

Consumers should check packaging for one of the following USDA inspection marks:

Mark Type Code
Establishment Number EST-582
Packing Code P-894

If either code appears on the package, the product is part of the recall—even if it’s already in your freezer.

What Went Wrong?

According to the USDA’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS), an investigation revealed that wooden sticks entered the production line before battering, becoming embedded in the corn dog coating. The contamination likely occurred during a mechanical failure or handling error at the Texas plant.

“Out of an abundance of caution, the company is voluntarily recalling this product,” Hillshire Brands stated. “This issue is isolated, and no other State Fair or Jimmy Dean brand products are impacted.”

Consumer Guidance

  • Do not consume any affected products.
  • Throw away or return to retailer for a full refund.
  • Report adverse reactions to the USDA or FDA via their online portals.
